You’ll see me mention Queens Comfort quite a lot, and that’s partially because the menu evolves more than any other I know… sometimes daily.  The team is constantly playing with new recipes, seasonal ingredients, and fresh inspiration.  Living up to the restaurant’s name, two of the newest dishes take comfort foods to a whole new level.  The Atomic Fire Balls are cayenne-breaded mac and cheese balls drizzled with sriracha and served with ranch dressing.  And the Zzzz Dawg was simply pHeNoMeNaL… a frankfurter wrapped in bacon, blanketed with cheddar sauce, stacked with shoe string fried onions, and drizzled with BBQ.  Queens Comfort * 40-09 30th Ave * (718) 728-2350

Aughhhh. Such a dumb idea. Brb while I try to find something in my kitchen that can be a substitute…

The Hall of Justice in Ozone Park is yet another defunct Comic Shop in Queens. There are very few left.  Silver Age in Astoria, Comic Den in Kew Gardens (last legs), Comic Book Heaven in Sunnyside (last legs), Royal Collectibles in Forest Hills.  There’s Montasy in Forest Hills too and the completely wiling Duel Zone underneath the Hong Kong Supermarket in Flushing — but Duel Zone is mostly an ultra-insane super-serious Magic Card and Yu-Gi-Oh tournament spot.

Always fun to discover new changes at DiWine… like this lobster and leek pizza… a brick oven pie accented with sherry cream sauce, asparagus, corn, tomatoes, and slices of manchego cheese.  I also enjoy that all wines are $9 a glass or $32 a bottle—allowing you to focus on the wine selection without debating which price to choose.  DiWine * 41-15  31st Ave, Astoria * (718) 777-1355 * www.diwineonline.com

Jeezus. Why is everything in Astoria?

Terraza is one of the coolest bars in Queens or anywhere else in NYC. This is last night with the Alex Brown Quartet, playing on the suspended platform above the bar. Just about every night of the week has something awesome going on, from Latin jazz or folk to readings of a sort. You’ll dig.

No need to rub your eyes… yes, that’s a hot dog topped with mac & cheese with toasted bread crumbs on a grilled New England style bun.  They also come wrapped in bacon, topped with guacamole, chili, or even a fried egg.  Pretty cool hot dog menu at Bud’s Ale House.   34-02 Steinway, Astoria | www.budsalehouse.com

Authentic Mexican food doesn’t get much better than this rather hidden gem… Athens Grill.  Don’t be fooled by the name and walk past like so many erroneously do.  The owners may be Greek, but it’s definitely a Mexican run and patronized restaurant that serves killer tortas & cemitas (try the al pastor), huaraches, tamales ($1.50) and even tops their tacos with grilled nopales (cactus).  Wash it back with a MexiCoke, Jaritos, or tequila.  They even deliver, open daily ‘til the wee hours of the night (usually 4AM). China’s Liu Xiang provides the single most agonizing and inspiring moment of the Olympics so far. Liu had previously won the gold medal for 110m Hurdles in 2004 but was sidelined by an injury in his Achilles tendon in 2008.

Just watch. It’ll be the best two minutes you spend today.
